Chapped or cracked lips are common and typically caused by the weather, excessive lip licking, or certain medications. If you have chapped lips, you like face dryness, flaking, scales, swelling, cracks, or bleeding on or around your lips. Fortunately, chapped lips are typically no big deal and can be easily treated and prevented.

Here at Costa Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we see many patients who ask us how they can treat their chapped lips. Chapped lips can affect the look of their smile and cause some discomfort so we like to recommend several home remedies. If you have chapped lips, be sure to apply lip balm throughout the day.

While there are many lip balms on the market, the most effective ones contain ingredients such as beeswax, shea butter, and titanium oxide. While shea butter adds and locks in moisture, beeswax seals the moisture, and titanium protects the lips from the harsh UV rays. Stay away from lip balms with synthetic fragrance, phenol, menthol, or petrochemicals as these ingredients can irritate and dry out the lips even more.

In addition to using a quality lip balm, we encourage drinking plenty of water and using a humidifier at home. On particularly cold days, it’s a good idea to wrap your mouth with a scarf to protect your lips.
