Will I Bite Through Invisalign While Playing Sports?

Posted .

Many of our patients here at Costa Family & Cosmetic Dentistry play a variety of sports. Whether they play baseball, football, tennis, soccer, lacrosse, wrestling, or another sport, they wonder how it will affect their orthodontic treatment. Recently, we’ve had several patients ask us whether they can bite through Invisalign while playing sports.

We recommend that patients that play sports remove their Invisalign aligners and wear a protective mouthguard over their teeth. This is a particularly good idea if they play contact sports like football and wrestling. As soon as the game is over, they should pop their aligners back in their mouth.

This strategy will help them avoid biting through Invisalign while playing sports. It will also protect their mouth and reduce their risk of injury. It’s important to understand that while Invisalign can be removed while playing sports, Invisalign aligners should be kept in your mouth for at at least 22 hours a day. Leesville Road dentist, Wells Family Dental, has told us that many of their younger patients want to use Invisalign as their mouthguard or mouthpiece while playing sports. This is definitely not recommended.

By wearing Invisalign aligners for at least 22 hours a day, you can ensure your teeth gradually move into their proper positions. Since you’ll want to remove your aligners for activities such as eating, drinking, brushing, flossing, and playing sports, you want to make sure that you can complete all of these activities in 2 hours each day. This way, you can prevent delays in your treatment and achieve the straight teeth and beautiful smile you desire as soon as possible.
